Felix Klee’s Puppet Theatre (2019)

A collaboration with Douglas Young (composer) & Christopher Redgate (oboe). Image by Stu Allsop.

Douglas Young writes:

“I first saw the paintings and drawings of Paul Klee in Munich in 1970, but it was twenty years before I composed a work for the Lindsay String Quartet based on Klee images. In 2007 Joëlle Pappas choreographed my 2 piano work derived from Klee’s Pedagogical Sketchbook.

Around that time I discovered that the new Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne had a complete collection of the hand puppets Klee had made in the 1920s for his son Felix. These were highly original, amusing and infused with the spirit of Dada. Since then I have planned to create a work with Joëlle based on these hand-puppets ̶ of which today’s offering is the first sketch.”
